Cracked windshield – United B788 near Dublin on May 4th 2023

A United Boeing 787-8, registration N45905 performing flight UA-72 (dep May 3rd) from Washington Dulles, DC (USA) to Tel Aviv (Israel), was enroute at FL370 about 150nm southwest of Dublin (Ireland) when the right-hand windshield’s outer pane cracked prompting the crew to divert to Dublin, where the aircraft landed safely on runway 10L about 30 minutes after leaving FL370.

Passengers reported the airline told them a replacement aircraft would arrive on May 5th in the afternoon, more than 24 hours after the landing in Dublin, many passengers therefore booked other flights from Dublin to Tel Aviv via other airports. A few passengers were rebooked onto the direct El Al Flights departing Dublin for Tel Aviv in the afternoon of May 4th.

A replacement Boeing 787-9 registration N24974 positioned to Dublin on May 5th 2023, continued the flight as UA-3046 departing Dublin about 24 hours after UA-72 landed and reached Tel Aviv with a delay of about 24 hours.

The occurrence aircraft positioned back to Washington Dulles on May 8th.
